Spring at Yellow Dog Farm!

Finally, spring is here! The daffodils are opening up all around our property. Today is goat shearing day – a true sign of spring!

Mary Lake, will trim up our Angora goats and gather their fleece. Jim and I will scoop it up, skirt it and get it off to our favorite mill, Stonehedge Fiber Mill in Michigan. There, Debbie and her crew will blend the mohair with wool and will then spin it up into yarn for me to dye.

The nights are still chilly, so the goats will sleep in what we call a “puppy pile” at night now that they are sans fleece. Each goat will shear 4-6 pounds of mohair fiber- instant weight loss! And they are often unrecognizable to each other after – so they usually do quite a bit of head butting to figure it all out!

Yup. It is spring at Yellow Dog Farm!

Before we know it – it will be summer!

Yarn, yarn, everywhere yarn!

Hand painted brushed mohair: Grape Harvest

‘Tis the season for us to be readying for sheep and wool festivals. Our animals have been sheared and our fleece sent into be processed. I am spinning, beading, dyeing, and hand painting. Not to mention a great deal of knitting is taking place.

Alas – no shows.

So, we invite you to take a look at our Etsy shop. If you don’t see what you want, drop us a note.

Thanks,

Ellen & Jim

Just Back…from Rhinebeck!

Wowie!  Zowie!

Rhinebeck booth display

We had a great time at Rhinebeck.  Our very first time as a vendor!  We subbed in for our friends from Biltmore Wool Barn.  It was everything we hoped it would be. Thanks Kathy and Mark for thinking of us!

The festival is HUGE!  But it is very well run.  Our booth space in Barn 39 was immaculate – load in and out was a breeze.  And everyone around us was grand, especially the show visitors!  We learned lots about what to do and maybe not do.  We have our fingers crossed that we will have a “year 2”!
